Red Wolves make impact during B.C. road trip

Jul 29, 2023 | 12:00 PM

Wandering into an unfamiliar and hostile territory, Prince Albert’s Red Wolf boxing club wasted no time letting their competition know they were not backing down.

Of the five boxers who competed in Kelowna last weekend, two won their matches and the other three all won their final rounds. Noting the conditions at the time of the fights, Head coach Braddock Koch was very proud of his fighters.

“We were under duress, the heat was like 38 degrees,” he joked.

Winning their respective matches were Cruze Watier and Devon Masuskapoe.

Devon’s younger brother Evander faced a much taller opponent, and after losing the first two rounds, conquered the third. Lucas Tomayo moved up a weight class and lost by decision. Cole Ahenakew fought a top level welterweight and lost by split decision. In a post to social media, Ahenakew acknowledged the night they had.

“Had a great experience in Kelowna, got to fight as the main event, lost in a split decision in a close match, very competitive match. It was awesome to see the team compete and represent. I’m thankful for the support and friends that helped me get to where I am, ” he said.

In addition to an appetite for competition, the purpose of the club’s trip to B.C was also to open some doors for more trips and matches down the line. Koch noted when it was over he received lots of great feedback and even has three invitations from other clubs in B.C.

“The officials were praising my fighters and our club was recognized as a really solid club,” he said.

Chalking last weekend up as a good learning experience for his fighters, Koch said they will all now take a few weeks off to rest then get back at it.
