Nolan Kowal introduced as Raiders new play-by-play voice

The search for the next play-by-play announcer for the Prince Albert Raiders is over.

Following the departure of former voice Rob Mahon after two seasons, Pattison Media is excited to introduce Nolan Kowal as its newest member of the newsroom and as the new voice of Hockeytown North.

“I’m very excited,” he said. “I’m going to really strive to be one of the best broadcasters in the WHL. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone with the organization and the fan base, which I heard is very passionate. I’m looking forward to getting up there and getting started.”

Hailing from Winnipeg, Kowal comes to Prince Albert as a graduate of the Creative Communications program at Red River College where he majored in journalism. After post-secondary, he worked in various newsrooms in Winnipeg as a Video Journalist at both Global Winnipeg and CTV Winnipeg. He was also a news and sports anchor for 680 CJOB and a board operator for Winnipeg Goldeyes radio broadcasts.

Kowal is no stranger to play-by-play broadcasting either as he’s called games and done colour commentary for the MJHL’s Winnipeg Blues and University of Manitoba Bisons hockey teams. Most recently, he has spent the past two seasons as the voice of the Estevan Bruins in the SJHL. He was a member of the Bruins 2022 Championship team and has called games in both the SJHL finals and Centennial Cup.

“It’s been a fantastic experience,” he said. “Calling a championship and being apart of a Centennial Cup here in Estevan was just an unbelievable experience to have at the Junior A level so I’m still kind of riding high after that.”

Oddly enough, Rob Mahon also joined the Raiders from Estevan back in 2021 and actually went to Red River College with Kowal where the two became friends.

“It’s a small world,” he said laughing. “It might look like I’m following him around, career move to career move but [that’s] just how its kind of worked out. We do have a lot in common having gone to the same college program in Winnipeg and we became friends there – we worked together actually, we did some hockey together in Winnipeg.”

The Raiders open the 2023-24 season at home on Sept. 22 when they welcome the Moose Jaw Warriors to the Art Hauser Centre.
