RCMP search for stolen vehicle in James Smith, community’s leadership issues lockdown

Jul 25, 2023 | 1:32 PM

-An earlier version did not mention the lockdown issued by James Smith’s leadership. We apologize for the error.

RCMP has lifted a hold and secure order for James Smith Cree Nation, however, the community remains in lockdown.

Melfort RCMP recommended the decision, which asked people to stay inside, after getting reports Tuesday morning that a stolen black Cadillac Escalade from Prince Albert was in the community. It wasn’t known whether the driver was armed or not.

However, the First Nation’s leadership decided to issue a lockdown instead.

Police spent a couple of hours looking for the vehicle but were unable to find it. The hold and secure order was lifted soon after around 12 p.m. Despite this, the community’s leadership has not lifted its own lockdown.

The search for the vehicle, which has the license plate 190 MVF, continues, however, police have no leads on where it is or may be heading.

Anyone who spots the vehicle is asked not to approach and instead call RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
