SPCA alarmed by volume of stray dogs pouring into shelter

The Prince Albert SPCA is finding itself with double the normal amount of dogs in its care and they are now down to their last bag of dog food.

A big addition on Thursday means the shelter is now hosting 41 dogs while at the same time, adoptions have slowed over the summer, explained shelter manager Ashlee Bober.

“Yesterday alone we had 11 of them coming in which includes a mom and puppies that were found down by the riverbank,” said Bober.

The dogs that are coming in are strays roaming around the city and are not being reclaimed by their owners.

“It has been very overwhelming. We’re doing everything that we can to help out the animals that are in need here but the level of dogs coming and how frequently dogs are coming in is quite alarming,” said Bober.

The shelter capacity for dogs is 42, so as it stands, they can only take one more dog.

They are also looking for foster care for some of the animals and are allowing walk-in adoptions to happen.

Many of the dogs are larger breeds and eat more food.

They also have a significant number of cats.

People can help in multiple ways, by donating food at the pet store and having the shelter come pick it up, by sending money via email, by fostering or, best of all, adopting. Some of the dogs have their adoption sponsored by local businesses so the cost to the new family is minimal.

Mann Northway has promised to match any donation of dog food that is brought into their dealership, it was announced several hours later.

The shelter is very short on dry dog food and wet cat food. Having cash donations allows them to buy specialized foods for puppies or seniors but all donations are welcome, said Bober.

Email donations can be sent to donations.paspca@gmail.com.

At the very least, Bober hopes people share the posts asking for help as no one knows who among their friend group is thinking of getting a pet.
