Senior golf championships wrap up at Cooke

Former champions were recrowned, and new champions were named at Cooke Municipal Golf Course on Wednesday night as the 2023 Senior Men’s and Women’s Championships wrapped up for another year.

Competitors began on Monday and played through a rainy Tuesday before the trophies and medals were handed out on Wednesday.

On the women’s side, Regina’s Kim Walker took home the Senior Women’s Championship for the third straight year. The win was also her fourth in five years. She won with a +17, finishing three strokes ahead of Saskatoon’s Kathy Ziglo who shot a +20. Placing third and rounding out the podium was Cooke Municipal’s own Pauline McDougall with a +32.

In the Men’s Mid-Masters, Spiritwood’s Todd Turgeon took home the title for the first time, shooting one under par. When asked how the week went, Turgeon said it couldn’t have gone any better.

“I just played steady all week and hit a lot of fairways and tried to keep it below the hole,” he said. “Cooke is such a nice to play all the time, you want to be in position off the tee and on the green because it’s going to play so tough if you’re out of position. It’s my first time playing in this event, and everybody says to come play. The people are so great – just so much fun this week.”

As for the Senior Men’s Championship, that title was reclaimed by Weyburn’s Rick Hallberg, shooting a +5 to win the tournament for the fifth time. Hallberg finished four strokes ahead of Saskatoon’s Brad Phelps while Prince Albert’s Cliff Selander claimed third with a +12.

The Senior Men’s Championship wasn’t just about the trophy as the tournament also determined who would represent Saskatchewan at the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship in Pemberton, BC in early September. In total, five players will be heading out west including Hallberg, Selander, Saskatoon’s Dean Prosky, Delisle’s Colin Coben, and Prince Albert’s Martin Ring.

“I think we have a really good chance out there,” said Hallberg. “We’ve been close (to winning before), but we have a really good chance this year.”
