P.A. Police investigate scams targeting grandparents

Jul 20, 2023 | 11:03 AM

Seniors and grandparents continue to be targeted by the so-called ‘grandparent’ scam, which involves the scammer pretending to be family in distress.

Prince Albert Police said they are investigating multiple cases where the pretend family members call the victim and pretend someone is in trouble or needs money right away.

Victims are also told there is an order stopping them from talking about it.

Police are warning the public that calls asking for money for bail or fines or not to go to jail are suspicious and neither officers nor the court will call people asking to have money sent.

Similarly, if the caller claims to be a lawyer or family member and asks for money over the phone, people should be suspicious, hang up and call the police or that family member themselves.

Suspicion should also be directed if callers ask for cash and send a courier to pick it up or ask the victim to send money by courier or by using cryptocurrency like Bitcoin.
