P.A. family turns to yard work to help fundraise trip to field lacrosse nationals

When Dennis Pott found out that his son, Mitchell, was selected to be on Team Saskatchewan’s roster for the U17 Men’s Field Lacrosse National Championship, he thought there was no way that his son wouldn’t be going to the tournament.

But when he discovered that the games were in Prince Edward Island, his thoughts quickly changed.

“The thought of him (not being able to go) crossed my mind,” Pott said. “We knew we had to try to figure out a way to get him there, whether it be working or through sponsorships.”

A quick Google search reveals that a round trip for a family of four from Saskatoon to Charlottetown is anywhere between $3,000-$4,000, not including hotels or other expenses.

Additionally, Dennis said that the news of his son being selected came as a welcomed surprise to the family. So to help pay for the trip, he and his wife came up with the idea of helping their neighbours with yard work.

“It’s an option through Saskatchewan Lacrosse to get a jersey sponsored so we knew that was an option,” Pott explained. “But it was mine and my wife’s idea to some other fundraising to raise the rest of the funds. Whether it’s mowing yards, cleaning sheds, building sheds, collecting bottles – we’ve got an ongoing bottle drive too.”

So far, the family has raised over $1,000 and have roughly $2,500 to go before they reach their goal. The family can be reached at dpott@hotmail.com.

The U17 Men’s Field Lacrosse National Championship, Alumni Cup, gets underway from PEI beginning August 31 and going until September 3.
