New Year’s Eve vehicle chase proceeding to trial

Jul 17, 2023 | 1:00 PM

A series of events on New Year’s Eve that was initiated with a rural property theft, and ended with a fleeing vehicle getting stuck in the snow will be discussed in great detail during a trial this fall.

Jordache Bear, one of three people charged after the incident, was not present when her matters were discussed Monday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court. Instead her lawyer entered not guilty pleas on her behalf and confirmed a trial date of Nov. 10.

On the morning of Dec. 31, 2022, Prince Albert RCMP received a report of a suspicious skid steer and trailer parked at a residence on Muskoday First Nation.

The investigation determined the skid steer and trailer were reported as stolen earlier that day from a residence in Birch Hills. Three individuals in a white truck were seen nearby.

The same truck was driven past the officers as they were investigating the residence on Muskoday.

The officers attempted a traffic stop but were unsuccessful and the truck continued travelling to Highway 3, before turning onto Lake Park Road, then into a snowy field. That’s where the truck got stuck in the snow and the three occupants were arrested.

Inside the vehicle, officers located and seized a firearm and ammunition, which was improperly stored and were within reach of the occupants.

Bear, who was 31 at the time of her arrest, is facing facing two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000, as well as single counts of flight from police, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, and possession of a firearm knowing possession is unauthorized.

Bruce Ahenakew, from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, is charged with flight from police, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, and possession of a firearm knowing possession is unauthorized. His charges were also spoken to on Monday and adjourned to July 24 for a bail hearing.

The third person charged, Joel Reese from Connaught, is currently on bench warrant status.
