Council backs motion to improve Cloverdale Road

With only one councillor opposed, the rest of Prince Albert’s city council backed Mayor Greg Dionne’s request to improve Cloverdale Road.

Dionne said the road conditions are bad enough that people are driving in the ditch in some places.

“This road is a constant headache. As soon as it rains, we’ve got to send our grader north of the river,” he explained. “If you look at the cost of sending a grader north of the river, we would have been better off to fix the road.”

The road has had continual problems for the last 19 years and was not constructed with a base. Instead, it was put on sand and every time it rains, there are problems.

“Lots of times after a heavy rainstorm, it gets so washed out, we actually drive in the ditch,” he said.

He asked for staff to find ways to pay for it within the existing budget, a notion the director said might be possible. Failing that, Dionne asked to have the project guaranteed in the 2024 budget.

Residents from that area pay the asphalt tax despite not having paved roads, which Dionne said they understand as they use pavement while in the city.

“They thought it was time we stepped up and helped them out,” he said.

Terra Lennox-Zepp, the councillor for that area, said she has received multiple complaints from residents.

“It does seem to be constant. We do seem to need to be grading it constantly. As the residents would say, they invite us to drive that road to see if it is driveable and it often is not,” she said.

Cloverdale Road is a feeder road for the subdivision and continues on into the RM of Buckland.

Coun. Charlene Miller voted against the motion but did not specify why.
