Wyatt Nelson wins Junior Northern tournament at Cooke

Jul 8, 2023 | 12:23 PM

Wyatt Nelson came out of the Junior Northern Championships standing alone at the top.

It was a narrow finish as he won the tournament by one stroke, ahead of Kaleb Cournoyer who shot 161.

Following day one, Cournoyer led a tight pack atop the leaderboard with an 80, followed by Nelson and Jack Simonson who were two strokes back. Also in the pack was Ronan McDougall with an 84 along with Owen Nelson and Hudson McDougall behind him at 86.

Day two, however, proved to be the deciding day with the leaderboard changing greatly. Following his performance on day one, Simonson withdrew from the tournament leaving the leaders with a little bit more breathing room.

Having a little bit of weight off the shoulders opened the door for Wyatt as he shot four less on day two, posting a 78. Cournoyer managed to secure second place with the reduced pressure, scoring an 81 in his second outing. Rounding out the podium was Owen who managed a 77 in the second round, the best single day score in the tournament.

As for prizes, first place got a new golf club while the tournament’s top performers took home a box of golf balls. Nobody ended the day empty handed either as everyone received gift cards to the pro shop.
