Nipawin looks to apply for provincial disaster relief

Following a major wind event that saw trees uprooted or snapped in two on Canada Day, the Town of Nipawin will look to apply for disaster relief from the province.

Town staff said on July 4 that they are in the process of counting the damage and cleaning up in order to find out what the cost to the municipality will be.

Those numbers can be used to apply for the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program, which in turn may allow for private property damage claims.

They would apply no earlier than July 10th.

The storm had come from the west and tore a path through the central part of the town.

The agriculture grounds, which are expected to host the annual Exhibition in several weeks, saw damage to the newly expanded barn plus the downing of at least a dozen trees.

Multiple homes had trees damaging roofs, and fences, peeling off shingles and pulling up sidewalks.

At least one business reported a resulting gas leak and will now open with a modified food menu while the DLF PickSeed building on the south side of town saw a metal building flattened.
