Canada’s Agri-Minister in Italy for United Nations Conference

Jun 30, 2023 | 4:46 PM

An important conference is set to happen in Italy and Canada’s Minister of Agriculture is believed to be the one tasked with leading it.

Marie-Claude Bibeau is in Italy for the biennial conference of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) where she’s expected to be elected as the Chair of the seven-day event.

If she does get elected, she’ll be the first female agriculture minister to be in the role and the first Canadian to chair since 1997.

“This FAO conference is the largest in-person gathering of ministers of agriculture. Founded in Canada 75 years ago, the FAO is the world’s main authority for agricultural and food security issues,” said Bibeau. “Chairing this meeting is an honour that highlights our exceptional agricultural and agri-food sector.”

The main talking point of this year’s conference is water resource management.

Bibeau will also host a roundtable discussion with female leaders in agriculture.

While in Italy, she plans to take the opportunity to discuss Canadian agricultural opportunities with Italian agri-food stakeholders. This includes the mutual benefits of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

The conference officially gets underway on July 1st and goes until July 7th.
