For the second straight year, a Prince Albert football player will represent Saskatchewan at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship.

Raelynn Sande, a former River Rider and current St. Mary student has made the Sask u-18 women’s team for the event in Ottawa.

She told paNOW that she is very excited to be on the team again.

“I’m excited that this year there were more girls that tried out and it’s great to see women’s football growing.”

Training Camp for the team takes place in Regina from July 18 to 20th. The first game for Saskatchewan is on July 23rd against Alberta.

Alberta took the championship last year, beating Saskatchewan 36-12.

Sande is hopeful this time will be different, and the team can come away with a gold medal. Sande will be joined by Tisdale player Shayden Magnus, who was also on the team last year.

“It’ll be a lot of fun, I’m very grateful to have had this opportunity and just very grateful for how fast women’s football has been growing in our province alone,” she told northeastNOW. “I’m just excited for the years to come when hopefully there’ll be every province that has a team and then this will one day be just as big as the men’s under-18 tournament.”

Sande said when it comes to the sport of women’s football, she’s excited to see it grow and hopes that trend continues.

“It makes me really happy because down south, there’s a football league down there and hopefully we can get one up north here too,” she said. “It just makes me excited knowing that there are more girls who like to play the game.”

Both Magnus and Sande said they’re grateful to their coaches and families for pushing them and supporting them in their journey to making Team Saskatchewan.
