Goats, pigs, and sheep help brighten P.A. seniors’ day

Those living at Prince Albert’s Points West Living retirement community got the chance to enjoy their afternoon with some farm animals.

Chuck Hawkins and Valerie MacDougall brought over several goats, pigs, and one sheep named William to brighten up the day for some who may not get opportunities to visit a farm on their own.

“The smiles that it generates, it’s priceless,” said Hawkins.

Despite the warm weather, those in the community were more than happy to spend time with the animals. For resident Gloria Hendricks, it was a chance to get some cute photos and videos.

“It’s a fun day for everyone that lives here. It’s something else to see,” she joked. “Everyone just really enjoys them.”

The animals also drew in some people who live near the retirement home, including several kids.

Unsurprisingly for Hawkins, the pigs, which were all between the ages of two and five weeks, were quite popular.

“I figured they would,” he laughed. “They truly are beautiful little creatures.”

Meanwhile, Hawkins said more groups in the area have started reaching out to see if they would bring over their animals.

He said they’re happy to do so as they believe they can really help people with their mental health, especially their goats. They already take part in Goat Yoga with Hawkins and MacDougall hoping to take part in more projects moving forward.

The couple does charge a small fee, though they explained this is mainly to cover the costs of transporting all their animals and making sure they have enough to eat and drink when out and about.
