The Howe family packed the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #2 in Prince Albert on Sunday to announce the winner of a Tanner Howe signed Regina Pats jersey.

The raffle got started back around Christmas where tickets for the raffle were $2 a piece or three tickets for $5. All of the money raised in the raffle went back into the community with half going to Canadian Tire Jumpstart and half going to the Prince Albert Legion. Tanner said the idea for the raffle all came from his grandfather, Brian.

“My grandfather brought it up to me and I thought that would be a nice thing to do for the community,” he said.

According to Brian, Tanner chose to donate some of the funds to the Legion while he chose to donate money to Jumpstart. When asked why he chose Jumpstart, Brian said it was for the kids.

“They do a lot of programs for (unprivileged) kids to get into sports,” he said. “Some of them don’t have the resources or the finances for equipment or stuff like that. That’s why I picked them.”

“I’m very proud of (Tanner),” he continued. “All I had to do was phone him and say ‘Tanner, can I get a jersey and get you to sign it because we want to do a raffle’ and he said ‘Sure, no problem.’ He didn’t mind.”

In total, $395 was donated to Jumpstart while the same amount was donated to the Legion. Rick Hodgson, president of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 2, said the donation and initiative from Tanner means a lot to the Legion.

“This means a lot, especially locally,” he said. “It was an idea (Brian) had coming into the winter and he got Tanner to sign a jersey and sold tickets, it was great. With Brian giving half to the Legion and half to Jumpstart, it’s good for the whole city. To have a local boy like that looked at and the things that went through with the jersey, it’s beautiful.”

As for who won the raffle, former Legion president Wayne Goldsworthy took home the autographed Howe jersey. Brian added that they hope to do the raffle again next year.
