City of P.A. approves permit for Sikh Temple

Jun 18, 2023 | 8:00 AM

Prince Albert will soon have a Sikh Temple (gurdwara) following a decision by city council to grant a development permit for the change of use.

The application reads that the building will have one person living onsite as the only staff member and is located on a medium-density zoned lot in the East Hill neighbourhood.

Busy hours are expected to be between 6:00 and 8:00 pm every day except Sunday when it will be busy from noon until 2:00 pm for prayer services.

The city received two letters of concern regarding parking for the temple.

One letter stated that she welcomes the gurdwara to the neighbourhood but when it is in use, the cars block access to the alley.

In the future, the temple hopes to modify the lot to allow for parking onsite, which would mean there would be fewer vehicles on the street.

Around 10 people attend the evening services and about 30 go to the Sunday service but, according to the applicant, many of the attendees take transit as their main mode of transportation.
