Annual Summit Run sees hundreds turn out for first event since pandemic

Jun 17, 2023 | 1:20 PM

The annual Prince Albert Summit Run was held early Saturday morning which saw hundreds line up at the start line.

This is the first one in four years as the pandemic has halted the event since 2020.

Racers had the option to either walk or run and could choose how far they wanted to go as the event featured 10km, 5km, and 2km runs throughout the day. The event isn’t just for fun either, as a portion of the proceeds and funds donated by those in attendance will be donated to the Rose Garden Hospice.

Summit Run race director Lisa Evans was on hand and shared her thoughts on having the race back after the long hiatus.

“The energy from the race today was fantastic,” she said. “It was really fun to be able to host that for the community again.”

Deb Edmison has been participating in the event for almost a decade but this time was a bit more special as she was celebrating her birthday. Her friends and family surprised her with matching blue shirts for her 65th and according to her, the matching shirts came out of the blue.

“It caught me off guard,” she said laughing. “This shirt was given to me on the street just around the corner so we had to change.”

“It’s wonderful to have the run back,” she continued. “Once we heard it was back, we all signed up. We’ve done it in the rain, we’ve done it in the sun, we’ve done it in the wind, we’ve done it as a group, it’s just fabulous.”

Andrew Giassa participated in the 10km run and came away with a time of 36:41.2, the fastest overall time in the category. After the race, he said his final time was a personal record and that he’s happy to participate for a good cause.

“I’m feeling fantastic, this is a personal best for me,” he said. “This is a very good opportunity to give back. I love donating to an event when the money is actually going to a good cause.”

In the other races, Christina Charles finished on top of the female 10km with a 40:10.5 time. Kevin Koerting finished the 5km run with an overall best time of 23:48.5 while Elayna Greenwood led the female race with a 26:59.2 time. Maya Bowden took home the best overall time in the 2km run with 10:23.7 while William Boden led the males with 10:24.9.
