A proud Shellbrook tradition continues

Escorted by the local fire department and RCMP, the town of Shellbrook’s grad class of 2023 was making some noise Friday afternoon.

The idea for the parade through town was created at the onset of the pandemic, but even after the restrictions were lifted the tradition continues. Kassie Ferster told paNOW she appreciates it.

“I think it’s fun and that way more people get to see the grads than can fit into the gym,” she said.

In September, Ferster plans to attend the University of Saskatchewan and take biomedical foundation. Her eventual goal is to be a dentist.

This year’s grad class consists of roughly 20 students. An official ceremony was held later in the afternoon. Adam Shakul was equally excited about Friday’s parade and what it means for Shellbrook.

“Since we are so small, we get more attention for the students which is always a good thing,” he said.

When asked about his own plans after graduation, Shakul had not quite made up his mind.

“Probably just go out and figure out how to be an adult and figure out life as it goes,” he said.

Randy and Coleen Collins are the parents of Justin Collins and equally enjoyed the parade.

“Some of the people in the community don’t get a chance to go to the ceremony so it’s a great way for the kids to be showcased and see the community,” Colleen said.

Each year the town goes to great lengths to recognize its grad class. Along with the parade, banners showcasing the graduates hang from the light poles along Main Street.
