Sci-fi musical about climate change coming to northern communities

Sum Theatre will be presenting a new musical play called Zero Gravity later this month in Rosetown, Prince Albert, Stanley Mission, and La Ronge.

“Theatre in the Park is a free, professional, family-friendly, theatre event that tours to local parks through Saskatchewan,” said co-director Mackenzie Dawson.

“What we do is every year we make an original play. It’s a musical play, so it feels like part rock concert, part live theatre. It’s a play with giant puppets and it really creates this out of this world feeling, which is fitting for this year because our show is a sci-fi show about climate change.”

The main focus of Zero Gravity is about climate change and breakdown. Dawson explained the play starts with Earth experiencing a climate breakdown and a few Earthlings are sent off the planet by their dad who built a rocket ship in their garage. The children land on another planet and learn what it means to live in another land in a good and positive way for everybody.

“While we do cover some important topics like climate change, we understand sometimes it can cause stress or unease for people, but I think the really great thing about Theatre in the Park is we always tackle these really important issues in ways that give people hope and are really positive,” Dawson said.

“Hopefully by making this event a community event where everyone can go, it not only gives people optimism about climate change, but also about being part of something bigger than themselves as part of a community knowing their neighbours and connecting with their local town.”

All residents are invited to attend the show and Dawson noted their plays tend to be popular with families. He added many of the kids are under Grade 6, but older children enjoy their productions to.

The northern tour for Zero Gravity begins June 26 in Rosetown at Kinsmen Park at 4 p.m., followed by Prince Albert on June 27 at Kinsmen Park at 7 p.m. On June 28, the production will be in Stanley Mission at Keethanow School at 1:30 p.m. and finally La Ronge at Morley Wilson Park on June 29 at 7 p.m.

“We are really excited to bring the show to Stanley Mission. We were trying to get up there last year and there was a lot of issues with the local fires,” Dawson said. “This northern leg of touring has been a long-term goal for us.”
