A woman from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation is one of only 20 recipients of the $10,000 per year (up to four years) RBC Future Launch Indigenous Youth Scholarship.

Jana Sasakamoose is currently pursuing her Masters of Science degree at the University of Regina. The mother of seven young children (including two step kids), said she is determined to obtain her degree to show others in her community that Indigenous women can succeed in business.

“I moved to Regina to complete my education, and connect with more career opportunities to meet my career goal of helping First Nations peoples,” Sasakamoose said. “With my determination and positive approach to life, I hope to show that I am an educated First Nations Woman in business, thereby serving as a role model with strong moral values.”

More than 300 Indigenous youth from across Canada were considered for the annual award, which is now in its 30th year and recognizes both strong academic performance and community involvement.

The recipients share a vision for the future including giving back to their communities and creating a more inclusive Canada that unlocks more opportunities and equity for Indigenous peoples.

Previously obtaining a Business Administration Degree at First Nations University, Sasakamoose is managing her workload at University of Regina while raising her children. She explained her main objective after graduating is to have the ability to make a positive impact on Indigenous communities.

“My future plan is to be involved and create energy management projects for First Nations communities all over Saskatchewan,” she said.

The 20 recipients showcase excellence across a multitude of academic disciplines spanning Healthcare, Engineering, Business, Sociology, Law, Dentistry, Education, the Arts, and more.

They share a vision for the future including giving back to their communities and creating a more inclusive Canada that unlocks more opportunities and equity for Indigenous peoples.

“We know that access to education plays a vital role in preparing young people for their futures,” said Mark Beckles, vice president, Social Impact and Innovation, RBC. “This scholarship was designed in partnership with the Indigenous community to support their scholars as they pursue their chosen academic path. It is such an honour to read their stories and learn how they are making an impact in their respective fields and supporting Indigenous peoples.”
