P.A. archers on the podium at Canada Cup West

A Prince Albert archery club had some of the best archers in the country in their own backyard this past weekend.

The Canada Cup West took place at the Prince Albert Wildlife Federation Friday through Sunday, with the Timberland Bowbenders as the host team.

Among the hundreds of archers who participated were some local shooters, including 14-year-old Gage Malenfant who finished second in the Compound U18 category. Teammate Trevor Chandler was beaten by Malenfant in the quarterfinals.

Malenfant lost the final match to Sherwood Park’s Riley Warwa.

Meanwhile, Tristan Spicer-Moran finished fourth in the Compound U21 division while Charles Jones made it to the fourth round.

President of the Timberland Bowbenders Stacey Moran said this was the fourth time the club has hosted this event, adding they were also the site that held nationals back in 2019.

When asked why Prince Albert is such an attractive place for these competitions, Moran said it’s because of the club.

“We’re very organized and we’ve got all the equipment to host them, and we’ve proven time and time again that we were capable,” he said. “It’s a pretty good chance that we’ll get it again. Archery Canada sees us as one of the premier clubs in Canada.”

He added that with Prince Albert’s club always on the radar for Archery Canada, he’s looking forward to hosting the event again in the future.
