St. Mary students add some colour to Prince Albert’s downtown

Prince Albert’s downtown is receiving a fresh coat of paint, thanks to the creative minds of some art students at St. Mary High School.

Leading up to the street fair next weekend, a number of windows along Central Ave. will be used as canvasses. Teacher Krysta Hawryluk explained the goal is to try and brighten up the downtown, and also get the students involved in the community.

“The kids were just so excited. They’re just having the greatest time. Lots of them were saying how it’s kinda nice to give back to the community and kind of make our presence known because a lot of times the arts fall under the radar,” she said.

Dallas Tessier is a grade 10 student and expressed how much fun she was having.

“To be able to show our creativity and that anyone can do art and anyone can create things like this,” she said.

Tessier was busy working on a landscape scene, and when asked what her vision was, replied to show people the beauty of sunsets.

Rhonda Trusty, Executive Director of the Prince Albert Downtown Business Improvement District was the one who reached out to St. Mary High School.

“Share with them my dream and vision to bring more students into the downtown and give them some different experiences and give them some positive and fun memories of the downtown,” she said.

Trusty noted the business owners she spoke to all loved the idea. Trustee has also been working with the community services dept. at City Hall to get more planters installed outside the businesses.

“It takes the work of a community. I can’t do it alone so it’s been very wonderful to have the support of St Mary students,” Trusty said.
