Championship season at a championship-calibre course opened with a bang this week at Waskesiu Golf Course with the Senior Men’s Lobstick.

After days of intense play and close matchups, the tournament has wrapped up successfully.

A steady dose of rain last week and into this week made the course tricky to keep in shape, and unfortunately, some of that rain fell on Tuesday night. Crews, however, worked from midnight right to the opening shotgun and the course was in top shape when tournament play began.

“The weather cooperated for the most part,” said Paul Schatz, PGA of Canada head professional at Waskesiu Golf Course. “It just got a little bit wet and the golf course was almost unplayable Tuesday, but then it started cooperating. The sun beat down, the golf course dried out, and it was a fabulous venue for them to play on.”

Schatz lauded the camaraderie at the event, saying the golfers were in high spirits with good weather and good competition boosting their mood. In the end, that field of competition was close, so close in fact that it couldn’t be decided in regulation play.

“We had to settle the championship with a four-hole playoff, and both of those players that were in the playoff came from the group behind,” Schatz said. “The guys behind battled out really hard, and even farther down into our lower flights, some of them were separated by one or two shots going into (the final day).”

“When everybody comes up here, they’re just so happy to be up here,” Schatz said. “The venue is truly immaculate and the history and tradition with not only this event but the entire golf course, everyone comes up here and is in such good spirits.”

The eventual winner was Glen Erickson, who has won the event previously. He defeated Weyburn’s Rick Hallberg in the playoff.

The Senior Lobstick is just the start of an extremely busy run of tournaments for Waskesiu. Starting on Monday, they’re right back into competition mode.

“We have the four major tournaments out here, and next on the agenda is the Men’s which starts off with our open and qualifying rounds on Monday and Tuesday,” said Schatz. “We’re right back at it with five straight days of competition.”

Rick Yano was the winner of the Super Senior Division championship and was the leader of that division heading into play on the final day.
