Successful Pride Week In P.A. concludes, Pride Month continues

Organizers of Prince Albert Pride are finally able to catch their breath after one of their busiest weeks of the year and despite all the hectic work, they’re calling it a success.

Last week was Pride Week in Prince Albert, a series of events and opportunities for the people of Prince Albert to show support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. It culminated in a parade and the Pride in the Park event.

“It was a super successful week,” said Chelsea Bleau, chairperson of Prince Albert Pride. “We’re extremely happy with it. We’ve been getting nothing but compliments from people and we feel very accomplished.”

According to Bleau, there’s been a growing acceptance of Pride events in the community, and growing attendance to go along with it. Helping this year’s attendance along was a change of schedule that meant they didn’t have their largest event, Pride in the Park, at the same time as Regina’s Pride parade.

“This year, I feel like that’s another reason why it was bigger,” said Bleau. “People around the province had more opportunity to come in and support us, especially those in the NDP. One notable person that came was Nathaniel Teed, the first openly gay MLA in the province. This was actually his first Pride he was able to come and speak at!”

With the exception of a slur chalked onto the sidewalk ahead of Pride in the Park, the week went off without incident for the group. Though Bleau said progress has at times been “a slow grind” there is greater acceptance of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Meanwhile, Pride week may have wrapped up in Prince Albert, but June is Pride Month, and there is more still to come as the month rolls on.

“We’re going to have a booth in the market at Saskatoon Pride,” said Bleau. “For anyone who’s coming to Saskatoon Pride, you’ll be able to see us there. We’re going to have a booth just to hang out and talk to people about what we do in Prince Albert.”

“We will (also) have some more goals for stuff throughout the year,” they added. “We made a schedule for queer coffees that we’ll have once a month, I believe it’s the last weekend of every month we have it scheduled for.”

The final event of Pride Week in Prince Albert was the Calvary United Church Diversity service, which took place on Sunday morning.
