Highway 3 Baseball League welcomes new additions as 2023 season gets underway

Jun 7, 2023 | 2:05 PM

The dark and cold offseason is finally over for the Highway 3 Baseball League as the new season began with a pair of games on Tuesday night.

In addition to opening day, two new teams were introduced into the league with the Nipawin Giants and Hudson Bay Nationals making their debuts last night against one another, resulting in a 6-0 Giants win. The Tisdale Rangers were also victorious in their season opener last night, downing the Birch Hills Brewers 14-6.

With the new campaign underway, board member of the Highway 3 Baseball League Adam Morrison shared his thoughts on how exciting it is to see the league steadily grow year after year.

“To think that four years ago there was no senior baseball in the whole area and in three years, now we have eight teams and few teams asking about next year already,” he said. “It’s pretty awesome to have that ‘want’ to be on the baseball field, and certainly in a lot of the communities you can see it by the crowds getting out to the games and everything so there’s definitely that want.”

Along with the league expansion, new divisions were also created including the East which houses Hudson Bay, Nipawin, the Pasquia Angels, and the Porcupine Plain Pirates while the West Division has Tisdale, Birch Hills, the Humboldt Dodgers, and the Prince Albert Royals.

Morrison elaborated on the board’s decision to create league divisions rather than having one big league like in previous years.

“The board had to talk a lot about what we wanted to do to make sure that travel is still feasible,” he said. “The league is stretched out pretty far so we had to make sure that travel was still feasible for everyone. The reality is that everyone still has a day job so it’s kind of tough to be traveling three hours to play a baseball game at night so we came up with the divisions to hopefully cut down on travel and to make things more viable for everybody.”

The remaining team’s season openers will continue throughout the week with Pasquia getting the ball rolling tonight against the Pirates in Porcupine Plain while Prince Albert will hit the road to face Humboldt for a doubleheader on Saturday.

The league will also be hosting a showcase tournament on July 8 in Tisdale where all eight teams will be playing a double header that day against out-of-division teams.
