The Pan-Canadian Smart Farm Network has a new member.

Olds College of Agriculture and Technology announced Enterprise Machine Intelligence and Learning Initiative (EMILI) is bringing Innovation Farms Powered by AgExpert into the network.

The network has six members across three provinces that work collaboratively toward enhancing tech solution and sustainability.

Olds College Vice-President of Research Dr. Joy Agnew said the network gives all members the opportunity for open communication and co-operation to leverage the full potential of digital technologies.

“Together, we’re able to better access and apply innovative technologies and best practices that enhance productivity, reduce costs, and increase profitability by sharing our knowledge and lessons learned,” Agnew said.

The network launched in 2021. In addition to EMILI and Olds College, it includes Glacier Discovery Farm Langham located just north of Saskatoon, Sask., Lakeland College located at Vermilion, Alta., University of Saskatchewan Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence located near Saskatoon, Sask., and Manitoba Beef & Forage Initiatives Inc. located in southern Manitoba.

The provincial government, in partnership with other organizations, launched a new initiative to support the mental health of farmers while promoting farm safety in New Brunswick.

As part of the initiative, a website has been developed as a hub where mental health and wellness training, tools and resources will be easily accessible.

This comes after a 2021 University of Guelph research study found 76 per cent of farmers said they were under moderate or high stress.

The same study saw one in four Canadian farmers say they had had suicidal thoughts over the past two years.

The total value of Saskatchewan exports to the world reached a record-breaking $52.6 billion in 2022 which is up 42 per cent from 2021.

Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership and the province released the annual state of trade report, which said a significant portion of export growth was driven by potash.

Oil exports increased by more than 50 per cent last year, and agri-food and manufactured goods also saw record years.

Trade Minister Jeremy Harrison said businesses and industries in Saskatchewan continue to be a dependable supplier of sustainable resources needed around the world.
