Deschambault Lake orders evacuation as wildfire nears community

Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation has issued a community public notice for Deschambault Lake, ordering an evacuation as an out-of-control wildfire is threatening to engulf the community.

The evacuation notice was sent out Friday by Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation.

The KPIR02 fire was first spotted on Thursday south of the lakeside village and has grown to over 1,300 hectares in less than 48 hours. The fire has also cut off the only road into the community, Highway 911, leaving residents stranded in their homes.

Since the fire has cut off the only road into the village, residents are being evacuated by boat. However, convoys have been arranged to go through the fire on Highway 911 when it’s deemed safe to do so.

The fire is currently less than 3km south of the community.
