National Hotel has date set for meeting with the wrecking ball

May 19, 2023 | 3:00 PM

The National Hotel’s days are numbered and on Tuesday, city council will be asked to give their blessing for the date to start in July.

A report to council said the demolition is scheduled to start the first week of July but it could take weeks to complete.

“The demolition will take place in stages, as the adjacent building housing Georgie’s Beer & Wine will remain on site, and precautions need to be taken to ensure the integrity of the building is not compromised during the demolition,” says the report.

Georgie’s will likely be closed for two weeks of the time while the top two stories are removed but the business will need to be closed until it is safe to re-open.

At times, 1st Avenue West from the intersection of River Street West to 10th Street West, and from 1st Avenue West to the alley access between the hotel and the Checker Taxi stand, will need to be closed and heavy trucks will be hauling away debris.

Council will also be presented with items such as an update on a piece of public art that was commissioned and a $100,000 donation to the fire department.

As it is a meeting of the executive committee, the meeting starts at 4 pm but will be preceded by a short special council meeting to consider a liquor store application.
