Some Saskatchewan producers will be able to get extra help to cover the cost of transporting feed after theirs was damaged.

Federal Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit announced a supplemental freight adjustment to reflect higher than normal replacement feed costs.

Marit said in southwestern Saskatchewan, some producers suffered multiple years of dry conditions and experienced an increase of wildlife damage.

He said to maintain herds, some needed to travel throughout the province to replace feed damaged by wildlife.

Seeding progress across Manitoba is moving at a rapid pace with the recent warm weather.

In its first crop report of the year, the Manitoba government said seeding is at about 25 per cent, well below the five-year average of 63 per cent but better than the 10 per cent reported at the same time last year.

Producers were able to seed most fields, unlike the previous week where they were more selective on which field to plant due to wet soil conditions.

Cereal plantings are expected to wrap up towards the end of the week and soybean and canola seeding is expected to increase. Corn planting is at 15 per cent complete and is expected to increase as the week progresses.

The weather forecast is looking favorable for continued seeding progress over the next week.

Quebec is becoming the epicentre for Canadian avian flu cases.

More than 7.6 million birds in Canada have either died or been euthanized due to the flu since last year, including 945,000 in Quebec.

As of last Friday, 20 locations in the province were considered actively infected.

Alberta had the next highest number of infected sites with 11, followed by British Columbia with eight.

More than 7.6 million birds in Canada have either died or been euthanized due to the flu since last year.

Avian flu has been discovered in 274 bird species, as well as dozens of mammals including seals, foxes, and raccoons.
