Fire ban issued for province north of Hwy 16

May 16, 2023 | 11:35 AM

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) has issued a provincial fire ban for Crown lands, provincial parks, and the Northern Saskatchewan Administration District north of Highway 16.

It’s effective immediately and includes open fires, controlled burns, and fireworks.

Several municipalities in the province already have existing fire bans. The SPSA suggests and encourages other municipalities to review the fire risk in their areas.

“While many people are looking forward to the long weekend, the decision to implement a fire ban is necessary in order to protect lives, communities, major infrastructure, and resources from wildfire,” SPSA president and fire commissioner Marlo Pritchard said in a media release.

The province has 28 wildfires currently. To date, Saskatchewan has had more than double the number of wildfires for this time of year.
