Bears head coach excited with new group of signees

Wednesday was a busy day for the Prince Albert Northern Bears, signing six new players to the team for the 2023-24 season.

Bears head coach Steve Young talked to paNOW about the exciting day, sharing his thoughts on the new faces set to come to Prince Albert.

“What we’ve been able to do is add a bit of a mixture with the players we’ve brought in,” he said. “’The ’08s are the first-year players that we can bring in this year so we’ve gone ahead in that direction. Plus, we have some players that have played at this level and U18AA so we’ve got a mixture right now and we’re excited about the ones we’ve signed thus far.”

Among the new players donning the black and orange next season are Arlise Schmalz, Marly Dumanski, Emery Rogers, Macy Nowosad, Addison Davidge, and Mikaya Anderson. For Schmalz and Nowosad, it’s a coming home story with both players spending time playing Prince Albert during their minor hockey careers.

“With Macy, she’s played bantam here and she has played in the league so we believe that’s going to help us,” Young explained. “With Arlise coming in as a first-year player and being from Prince Albert, it’s what we want. I think both of them will have some different roles on the team obviously, but at the same time I think they’ll both grow with the club and get engaged early.”

As mentioned before, Nowosad has spent some time in the league but she’s not the only signee who saw ice time as Dumanski was her teammate last season with the Battlefords Sharks.

Nowosad spent two seasons with the Sharks, posting four goals and one assist in 58 games played while Dumanski tallied one goal and four assists in 30 games in her rookie campaign.

“We knew a little bit about Macy and we did need to add to our blueline,” Young said. “At the same time with Dumanski, we believe that she’s a big power forward. We believe that both of them can play and that their experience is going to help us.”

The Bears get the 2023-24 season underway in the fall.
