P.A. nurse seeks NDP nomination for 2024 election

May 10, 2023 | 12:00 PM

A Prince Albert woman has served her community on the frontlines as a public health nurse for years and now, she wants to move to the front steps of the legislature.

Carolyn Brost Strom recently announced her intention to run for the Saskatchewan NDP nomination for the riding of Prince Albert – Carlton. The seat is currently occupied by Sask. Party MLA Joe Hargrave.

“I feel that Prince Albert needs better representation and someone that lives here that’ll be able to identify with the needs of this city, the needs of this constituency,” said Strom in an interview with paNOW.

She shared some of the key reasons why she chose the Saskatchewan NDP.

“The NDP is the party that started public health care,” she said. “Their approaches to more acknowledgement to the social determinants of health just seem to fit with my job as a public health nurse.”

No surprise, health care will be a big priority in her campaign, but she will also focus on education being married to a teacher and having kids who are in public school. She said she can understand some of the struggles teachers and educators are facing in the province.

“I see education as an investment, and we need to set these kids up for the future.”

Another major component of her platform is community safety, saying she’s already heard from several residents regarding issues like theft, vandalism and not feeling safe while walking in the community. She added the solutions need to come from all forms of government.

“There’s more than one thing to address there,” she said. “I think it involves the provincial government, the city. Just making sure that everybody is aware of what’s going on and they’re working together to figure out how to make communities more safe.”

Now that Strom has launched her campaign, she’ll be spending time knocking on doors, making calls and getting in touch with residents on Prince Albert – Carlton. She plans to bring concerns and suggestions back to the NDP.

Overall, she’s looking forward to the coming months and is excited for the chance to possibly represent her community.

The next provincial election is scheduled to take place in the fall of 2024.
