Well-known P.A. community member donates $10K to support local Ukrainian newcomers

Ukrainian newcomers in Prince Albert are getting a helping hand from the community’s most-well known philanthropist.

Malcolm Jenkins donated $10,000 on Wednesday, which will be used to buy different necessities for the 68 families who now call the city home.

This includes groceries, furniture, and more.

Jenkins told reporters this was one of the easiest decisions he’s ever made.

“This is a world tragedy and any little thing we can do to assist these poor folks we’re going to do it.”

A $10,000 cheque was given to Sonya Jahn, who’s been helping all the newcomers get situated in the community.

She said every Ukrainian adult has been able to find a job, however, they still need support.

“Some people may not realize that these families just come with the clothes on their backs and one small suitcase, so they really need everything.”

Canadian Tire, which Jenkins owns, has hired quite a few newcomers. Jenkins joked he’s lost track of how many he’s hired as some were able to get other jobs.

If given the chance to hire more, he said he’d jump on the opportunity.

“They’re just the best people, the finest people.”

Meanwhile, some of the $10,000 will be used on bike helmets and locks as the city of P.A. recently donated 50 bikes to different newcomers.

“It’s something that’s very much appreciated and very much needed,” added Jahn.

She noted the bikes are currently undergoing repairs to ensure they’re safe to use.
