Clearwater River & La Loche issue mandatory evacuations

May 4, 2023 | 5:27 PM

Update: The Village of La Loche has now issued a mandatory evacuation notice.

People in the area are asked to register at Ducharme Elementary School so leadership knows who has left and who might still be in the community.

Multiple buses are currently transporting people to Regina with multiple rooms having been set aside at one hotel and the University of Regina.

People are being reminded to only pack the necessities, such as important documents, proper identification, several days’ worth of clothing, and medicine. The village is also suggesting grabbing all precious photos and mementos that cannot be replaced.

The village has also issued a state of local emergency.

The Clearwater River Dene Nation has issued a mandatory evacuation order for all members on reserve.

A wildfire between the community and the Village of La Loche remains out of control.

CRDN Councillor Roy Sean Cheecham told paNOW crews were optimistic this morning that they could get the blaze under control, but conditions got worse in the afternoon.

“Flames are literally feet from houses in one area,” he said. “It is away from the main populous area of the reserve but it’s just too hectic.”

Multiple buses were brought in to transport members to Lloydminster where most of the first evacuees from the day before had been staying.

More information to come…
