Ahtahkakoop drive-in theatre robbed, fundraiser being planned

May 4, 2023 | 5:00 PM

A drive-in theatre in Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation won’t be opening for the foreseeable future after it was robbed.

Owner Ryan Peekeekoot told paNOW early Monday morning, multiple people took several generators, stereos, security cameras, and more.

He believes everything taken was worth around $10,000 combined.

Peekeekoot said he was planning to open this week, but now he won’t be able to until he gets his equipment back or replaces it all.

However, people in the community have already started to show their support.

“People are already sending us money, which is awesome and heartwarming,” said Peekeekoot.

He added his friend Dean Gauthier, who happens to be a musician, came up with an idea to help him raise some funds.

“He messaged right away, and he wanted to help out, so he’s bringing his generators and sound system and we’re going to have a fundraiser (in Ahtahkakoop).”

It’s scheduled to happen on May 13th and has plans to include other musical acts, food, and an auction featuring items being donated by different people.

Peekeekoot said the support has been overwhelming. Depending on how much is raised, he wants to have the entire site powered up, so he doesn’t have to rely on generators anymore.

“I’d ultimately like to get power up there, solar power would be awesome.”

Meanwhile, the RCMP are asking the public for help finding the stolen items and the people responsible.

According to security footage, the suspects were wearing all black and drove off in an older model red Chevrolet truck.
