‘You can’t ask for a better community’: Young athletes enjoy Sports on Central celebration

Prince Albert’s downtown was transformed into a sports centre for young athletes in the community this weekend.

Sports on Central was held on Saturday where residents could play street hockey with the Raiders, or even play some football with a Saskatchewan Roughrider.

Linebacker Derrick Moncrief was the Rider in PA yesterday, where he said the event made him feel like he was back at home.

“Being here means everything to me,” he said. “Being from a small town in Prattville, Alabama, it reminds me of home. To try and give back as much as I can. The best thing you can do is to spend time with kids and spend time in the community.”

“Sports bring people together, sports motivate you, it gives you inspiration,” he added. “Sports is one of the biggest things you can do.”

Along with Moncrief, a trio of Raiders also made appearances where Grady Martin, Eric Johnston, and Max Hildebrand played street hockey with the kids and even participated in the Police versus Fire game.

Organizer Meghan Mayer said the event went like a dream.

“I am over the moon happy with how everything turned out,” she said. “Watching the kids’ faces, watching the community come together, watching all the vendors work, it’s just amazing. I was actually amazed when I came out and saw the sea of people. I couldn’t be more happy.”

She also praised everyone involved with the event, saying it couldn’t have been a success without them.

“This is the most amazing community,” she said. “A lot of the sponsors not only donate money, but a lot of them also came out and worked and were volunteering as well. You can’t ask for a better community.”

The event ran on Saturday at Plaza 88 from 12-6 p.m.
