Candle Lake Season

New walking trails, community recruitment among pre-season work for Candle Lake

May is supposed to open up with warm, sunny weather, and many campers are already making preparations to head up to the lake.

The Resort Village of Candle Lake is expecting another busy season once the last remnants of winter finally clear away. They, like the people who spend the summers there, are excited for the change in season.

“We’re looking forward to the weather warming up,” said Brent Lutz, administrator for the Resort Village of Candle Lake. “Most of the snow has gone away. Of course, there’s still ice on the lake, but in the coming weeks we expect that to open up.”

Throughout last summer, Candle Lake was working on expanding their walking trails. The first phase of that work is done, and throughout this summer they’ll be working on expanding their walking trails even further.

“We’re currently working adjacent to main street as we’re extending our walking trail along the west side of the lake,” Lutz said. “We have plans to add an additional almost kilometer of trail this year between the commercial centre at Candle Lake to the community hall grounds. Walking has become a very common pastime for people.”

Speaking with minor sports groups around Prince Albert, it seems almost all of them are looking at increases in membership after a long winter. Some of them are even setting records for participation. Candle Lake can expect a similar swell of enthusiasm for their programs.

“We’re certainly seeing lots of people interested in the lake,” said Lutz. “Some of them are coming for a short stay, others are coming and staying the season. I know all of our volunteer community organizations are trying to find people interested in the activities they offer, and most of our groups are seeing good additions to their membership.”

One change to note for people returning for the first time last since last summer: since then, the resort village has put a bylaw in place restricting the feeding of deer within the community to avoid bringing in both deer and their predators.

“We still see a lot of deer in the community,” said Lutz, “but we didn’t see them congregating in specific areas because people maybe, with good intentions, were feeding them and not realizing the dangers that poses.”

Lutz added Candle Lake officially kicks off the summer season on May Long Weekend with their annual welcome back event. He also said they were looking forward to allowing people to travel the resort village on golf carts this season.
