It’s a dream come true for a firefighter from Wakaw, who will be on the 2024 Saskatchewan Firefighters Calendar.

Cullen Giesbrecht was announced as one of the 12 firefighters during a jam-packed event in Regina last weekend.

“It was a great experience. They set a record for online votes this year and they had a record attendance for crowd as well,” he said.

The exact total is still being finalized.

Giesbrecht said he’s thrilled to be on the calendar after all the work he and the community did to drum up support. He added he got to know the other firefighters at the event well.

“The firefighters themselves that were on stage with me were all amazing, I made lots of new friends that night,” he said. “We all shared the same bond over firefighting and added a couple brothers and sisters (in) firefighting that night.”

Another local firefighter, Prince Albert’s Karsen Rylee, was at the selection night but did make the final 12 to be on the calendar.

Giesbrecht gave a shout-out to her and her rally for votes and supporting the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“I’m just thrilled to see that people were getting out and voting like they were,” he said. “I just would like to thank everybody who voted for me and also for Karsen who is from Prince Albert. I know she didn’t make it, but she did great that night.”
