Classes remain cancelled after two people stabbed at La Loche high school

School officials in La Loche have decided not to bring back students for classes after a staff member and a student were stabbed at the local high school last week.

On Saturday, Dene High School announced a staggered re-entry plan for students which was to begin Monday afternoon.

However, just hours before kids were set to start arriving, the Northern Lights School Division issued a letter stating there will be no classes at the school for the remainder of the week.

“We are working on a safety plan with multiple agencies within the community to ensure the safety of all of our students and staff,” the division wrote in the letter.

“Safety of our students and staff is our priority. This is an ever-evolving situation.”

The RCMP acknowledged the incident for the first time Monday in a brief statement.

“On April 20th, 2023, at approximately 2:30 p.m., La Loche RCMP received a report of an assault in progress at the Dene High School in La Loche, Saskatchewan,” the RCMP statement read.

“RCMP officers were dispatched and immediately responded to the school, locating an injured student and teacher. Both were transported and received medical assistance. There was no risk to the public as this incident was resolved quickly.”

The Mounties made no mention whether anyone had been arrested, only stating the matter remains under investigation.

Meanwhile, Dene High School remains open to support students, their families and staff for counselling services.
