Prince Albert’s medical officer of health was honoured this weekend for his work in the community.

The Victoria Hospital Foundation (VHF) held its annual Doctor’s Gala on Saturday where they presented Dr. Khami Chokani the MNP Award for Outstanding Achievement in Healthcare.

“I’m greatly humbled,” he said.

The VHF choose to recognize Chokani for his work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He provided feedback to P.A.’s city council when they were contemplating certain restrictions to help stop the spread of COVID.

Back in February, when Chokani was first announced as this year’s award recipient, VHF’s Executive Director Cody Barnett told paNOW it was an easy choice.

“The workload that he had and the incredible work he did just shouldn’t go unrecognized.”

Chokani also couldn’t accept the award without highlighting the rest of the healthcare professionals in the area, some of whom saved his life.

Last year, he ended up needing emergency heart surgery, something he continues to recover from. The gala was one of the first public appearances he’s had since the incident.

“Me being here today is an example of the quality healthcare we have,” he said. “P.A. is amazing, our health team is amazing.”
