Winter's Last Gasp (Hopefully)

Rain, wind, snow all in the cards for Prince Albert thanks to Colorado Low

Winter just doesn’t know when to quit.

A weather system moving up from the south is going to send temperatures well below seasonal averages for the next two days or so, and more snowfall is likely coming with it. Wednesday is shaping up to be the coldest day, as the early forecast shows we won’t even get above freezing that afternoon.

“We have a Colorado Low that is approaching from the south,” said Justin Shelley, a meteorologist with Environment Canada. “That’s going to impact a big portion of the southeastern prairies starting overnight and into tomorrow. What that system is going to do is pull in some colder air from the North.”

The worst of the forecast is reserved for the southern part of the province, as is the heaviest snow. Much of the snow in Prince Albert has melted, but it will get some reinforcements out of this weather pattern.

“There are two little waves of precipitation,” Shelley said. “There’s a large area of precipitation just to the south that’s moving north. We’ve seen reports of both rain and snow out of that band of precipitation… you’re going to be dealing with that throughout the afternoon and into the evening.”

Later in the evening, the heavier snow will begin to fall on the southern part of the province but that doesn’t mean Prince Albert will dodge it entirely. Some snow accumulation should still happen, especially since temperatures will be below freezing for the next several nights and even into Wednesday afternoon.

“When all is said and done, by Wednesday night into Thursday morning you could be looking at five to 10 centimeters of snowfall,” Shelley said. “With this system as well, there will be some strong easterly winds that start to pick up this afternoon.”

The good news is, the colder weather isn’t going to ruin your weekend. If you can stomach another few days of cold winds and light snow, we’ll come out the other side of it by Friday.

“It will linger a bit into Thursday,” Shelley said. “About two to three days of prairie spring weather for you, then a quick rebound by Friday. Over the weekend, we should be back into some sun and some seasonal temperatures.”

Shelley added that the most accurate data Environment Canada has shows this is nowhere near the coldest April has been in the Prince Albert area, as they’ve recorded temperatures as low as -18C around this date.
