P.A. woman tackles historic Boston Marathon

Apr 18, 2023 | 5:00 PM

A Prince Albert woman has officially finished the Boston Marathon for the second time in four years.

Vicki MacPherson took part in the world-famous race on Monday, coming in with a time of 4:08:58. She previously ran the marathon back in 2019, but this time around she was able to pace herself and finish around 20 minutes faster.

“You hear everybody say it’s all downhill the first 10 km, don’t go out too fast and the first time I did,” she said. “This time, I knew I had to hold myself back…. although it’s downhill, it’s really hard on your legs and if you’ve never done it before you don’t realize it until you start to go uphill.”

MacPherson got the chance to meet people from across the globe. She joked many people were a bit confused when she tried telling them where she was coming from.

“Never mind Prince Albert, they were confused when I said Saskatchewan,” she said.

In what could only be described as a small world experience, MacPherson was getting on the bus which would drive her to the start of the race when she found out that the woman next to her was from Toronto and the woman behind her was from Montreal.

“It was kind of neat that in a group of 30,000 people, I just happened to be standing with two other Canadians.”

The Boston Marathon is the first major race MacPherson has participated in. The others are the Chicago Marathon, New York Marathon, Berlin Marathon, the TCS London Marathon, and the Tokyo Marathon.

“My husband and I like to do destination runs, so we went to Hawaii and did the Maui Marathon back in January,” MacPherson added.

Now that the race is over, she and her husband plan on attending a Boston Red Sox game. MacPherson joked that a trip to Boston can’t be complete until you visit Fenway Park.
