New R.M. of Prince Albert Municipal Centre close to finished

The R.M. of Prince Albert is getting ready to move into their new home and should have the keys by the end of the month.

Reeve Eric Schmalz told paNOW the building will house the administration office, the council chambers and the shop for the R.M.

“It’s going to house the entire R.M. of Prince Albert administration and public works departments. They will be completely housed in that building,” he said.

The council chambers will be in front of the building while the back will house the planning department, public works and administration offices.

“We’re expecting to have the substantial walk-through and turnover by the end of this month,” said Schmalz.

Some small things like signage and furnishings are still coming but the municipality hopes to have a grand opening this summer.

The R.M. has shared a building with the R.M. of Buckland for some time and shares some items with the other R.M.

Buckland will buy the R.M. of Prince Albert’s share of the building and keep some of the furnishings.

Schmalz said the R.M. saved money for quite some time in order to build the new facility but managed to move up their schedule when the province created the Municipal Economic Enhancement Program during the pandemic as an economic stimulant.

“Otherwise it probably wouldn’t have been spurred on as quickly as it has been,” he said.

Schmalz said they were lucky with their new building as the contracts and much of the pricing was locked in before inflation started skyrocketing last year and the cost of building has remained predictable and stable.

The new municipal centre will be located in an area called The Junction by Signature Developments, the same company that sold the City of Prince Albert land for The Yard, a short distance further north.

According to Signature’s website, a “large agricultural and rural distribution service supplier” will also be located on the site although the name has not yet been made public.
