Police have charged a man after a crash knocked out part of the Central Avenue Viaduct.

A chunk of the stone wall of the Central Avenue Bridge was knocked down the hill just in front of the Court of King’s Bench after what appears to be an early morning crash.

The section of the bridge, with pieces of rebar jutting out of it, was driven partway down the hill but had stopped before rolling all the way to the street below. Pieces of a vehicle of some sort are strewn all around it.

When a reporter with paNOW arrived on the scene, a piece of a car’s bumper was also down the hill near the damaged section of the bridge. What appears to be one of the vehicle’s headlights was lodged in a nearby tree.

A witness said they believed the crash happened at about 1:30 in the morning. The city’s public works department said they were aware of the crash. The Prince Albert Fire Department said they did not receive any calls for service in relation to this incident.

Police said they responded to the area early Tuesday morning. A 28-year-old man has been charged with impaired driving, refusing to provide a breath sample and failing to remain at the scene of a collision.
