Demand and popularity of heat pumps on the rise in Sask.

With energy costs on the rise and the federal carbon tax going up again, the demand for heat pumps last winter was big in Saskatchewan.

That’s according to the provincial base for Reliance Home Comfort which has seen a big rise in the popularity of the equipment.

Tyler Beresh with Reliance explained briefly what they are.

“Heat pumps are very much like an air conditioner but they are opposite in the sense that they put heat into your home versus taking the heat out of your home.”

He said some of the reasons for the popularity have to do with energy efficiency and reducing environmental impacts.

It’s also become a leading choice for some people who might not have other options when it comes to heating their homes.

“There’s a large market that may not have natural gas or electricity is more readily available and there’s some major energy savings and are cost-effective,” said Beresh.

Depending on where you look, some businesses in Prince Albert have seen more calls for the products, but not in a major way.

Korycki Mechanical told paNOW they have seen an increase in demand for heat pumps while Super Service Plumbing and Heating said it’s been status quo this year compared to others.

Unfortunately, the products don’t come cheap as larger units can range from $5,000 to over $8,000. As part of the federal government’s Climate Action Plan, Beresh said there are grants and rebates available.

“As high as $5,000 on equipment that can save a customer a lot of money,” he said.

Beresh ended by saying always to deal with a reputable contractor who is familiar with heat pump systems if you’re considering installing one.
