Marj Bodnarchuk has a long list of local initiatives she is involved in and on Monday she found out that others are noticing the amount of work she does.

Bodnarchuk was surprised – quite literally – with the Citizen of the Year Award at the Prince Albert Science Centre.

“It’s a wonderful honour and I am so surprised and honoured,” she said, after having a group of people hidden behind screens in the Science Centre come into her view.

She had been told that she was going to be there for a cheque presentation by Prince Albert Pulp to the Science Centre.

“This is a surreal moment. I can’t believe this is actually happening. This is just a dream right?” she said.

Bodnarchuk then gave credit to the community and the people’s willingness to work together on efforts such as the Science Centre. She is also a volunteer with the Veselka organization and every year helps run their Ukranian food booth at the Exhibition.

Other volunteer efforts include singing at nursing homes, she plays music at Calvary United Church and is a member of the Pineview Auxiliary.

Olga Karasiuk nominated Bodnarchuk for the award and noted how much time and effort she gives to her community.

“She does such wonderful work for our city. We are so proud of her and she never says no to anything,” said Karasiuk.

The award is sponsored annually by the Kinsmen and the Prince Albert Daily Herald.

The presentation of $3,000 did happen but only after Bodnarchuk had a chance to talk to friends and supporters.
