Changes announced for annual spring weight restrictions

Apr 5, 2023 | 12:13 PM

Mother nature is having an impact on the province’s highway system.

With warmer temperatures and longer days coming, the 2023 spring weight restrictions for secondary highways will be province wide effective Friday.

In previous years, the restrictions begin in March and are gradually phased in. However, due to colder weather last month, restrictions were delayed.

“Weight restrictions prevent damage during spring thaw to pavement and the ground beneath the road,” Highways Minister Jeremy Cockrill said a statement. “They reduce maintenance costs and enhance safety.”

The road bans reduce allowable weights on RM roads and secondary weight on provincial highways by 10 to 15 per cent and usually last about six weeks.
