Serious Incident Response Team to investigate arrest and tasing of man in P.A.

A man involved in an altercation with Prince Albert police remains in serious condition and now the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has been called in to investigate.

On Saturday night police said a black Dodge Avenger was reported stolen by its owner. That vehicle was eventually found by police who tried to stop it as it was driving on the road.

Three people were inside the vehicle, including its owner. During an interaction with the occupants and police, officers tried to take a 40-year-old man into custody.

At that time, the vehicle sped forward, colliding with a police vehicle. Several weapons were used by officers including a conductive energy device, collapsible batons and pepper spray.

Once the man was arrested, paramedics were called in and took the man to hospital where he remains in serious condition.

SIRT said a loaded handgun was recovered from the incident scene and has now been secured as an exhibit.

SIRT’s investigation will examine the conduct of police during this incident, including the circumstances surrounding the man’s arrest and the cause of his injuries.

Prince Albert police will continue to investigate the actions of the man leading up to his arrest. No further information will be released at this time and a final report will be issued to the public within 90 days of the investigation ending.
