Catholic School division sees breakdown of funding from provincial budget

The Prince Albert Catholic School Division has a better idea about how they will be funded following the province’s budget announcement last week.

During the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees on Monday, a breakdown of the funding numbers was presented for the coming year.

According to a summary of the budget allocation, the division is expected to receive almost $30 million next year, which is only an increase of 0.6 per cent from the 2023 numbers. That works out to $10,861 per student based on projected enrollment. That’s a rise of roughly two per cent.

In his report, Chief Financial Officer, Greg McEwen said the division is also eligible to receive $137, 532 of funding to support hiring Educational Assistants for 2023-24. That is the same amount the PACSD received for this school year.

McEwen also pointed out that funding for Preventative Maintenance and Renewal decreased by almost $78,000 from this school year.

The budget, which was unveiled last week, did see an increase in the amount of funding for education province-wide.

Capital projects saw a boost, with renovations to St. John Community School in the list of initiatives being funded. The Board found out that the province will be allocating $11.25 million for two ongoing projects in the division and planning for three new ones, including the renovations.

The province also announced that the division will, once again, be eligible to receive funding for summer literacy programs. That funding amounts to $20,000.
