Motion to borrow $30 million passes third reading

Mar 29, 2023 | 6:00 PM

With two councillors voting against it, Prince Albert city council voted this afternoon to borrow $30 million dollars.

The money is to pay for the city’s portion of the building costs of the new aquatic centre and twin pad arenas.

The vote was first put to council on Monday but was delayed after Councillor Charlene Miller refused to give leave to go to third reading.

Unanimous council consent is required to pass three readings of a bylaw in one meeting.

It will take about a week to prepare the loan documents but once they are done, the interest rate of 4.35 per cent (if it is still available in one week) will be locked in for the 35 years of the loan.

Miller said later that she knows the city needs the pool and arena, but she believed more should be done to make the buildings environmentally friendly so she continuously votes against them.

Construction on the project started last year and is expected to be done in 2024.
